Texas Cities People Are Flocking To And Fleeing From

Texas is a state that many people in the country are deciding to put down roots in. So what cities are the most popular to move to and which are being abandoned? Some people love the familiarity of growing up and living their entire life in the same city. Others can't wait to get out and move on from their small town ways. About 40 million Americans, or about 14% of the U.S. population will move at least once in their lifetime. Reasons for moving vary, from school, new jobs, relationships or the simple need for a change of scenery. While the reasons can vary, the places people are choosing to move to seem to be very similar. The website 24/7 Wall Street looked at population figures from 2010 and 2017 from the U.S. Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program and found the top ten areas people were moving away from and to in to United States. The common theme was people moving away from the snow belt and flocking to the warmer sun belt states.

Three Texas areas made the top ten list of areas people are moving to- Dallas- Fort Worth- Arlington metro area topped the list and the Houston- The Woodlands- Sugar Land came in at number 2. The Austin- Round Rock region also made an appearance, coming in at number 8 on the list. Other states on the list included Florida with 3 on the list, plus Arizona, Georgia and Washington. The Dallas area saw a population increase of over 555,000 people between 2010 and 2017 with more on the way.

So what are the areas people are moving away from? Shockingly, one Texas area did make this list- El Paso. The area has seen a decrease between 2010-2017 of about 21,000. Other areas seeing people leave include Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, St. Louis and Cleveland.
