COVID cases are showing signs of increasing due to the Omicron variant and more people in Tom Green County are getting vaccinated to protect themselves against the virus although vaccination rates in the county still trail state rates.

The latest numbers from the Texas Department of State Health Services show that more than half of the population over 5 in Tom Green County have been vaccinated with at least one dose. According to tabexternal.dshs.texas.gov:

  • 53.71% of those over 5 in Tom Green County have received at least one COVID dose
  • 48.36 % of those over 5 in Tom Green County have been fully vaccinated against COVID

The percentage of senior citizens vaccinated against COIVD is greater than 8 in 10 according to the State Health Services web site:

  • 88.11% of those over 65 in Tom Green County have received at least one COVID dose
  • 83.44% of those over 65 in Tom Green County have been fully vaccinated against COVID

The rates across the entire state of Texas are ahead of the Tom Green rates with the exception of those over 65 fully vaccinated against COVID. According to the web site:

  • 69.66% of those over 5 in the state of Texas have received at least on COVID dose
  • 59.93% of those over 5 in the state of Texas have been fully vaccinated against COVID
  • 91.92% of those over 65 in the state of Texas have received at least one COVID dose
  • 83.13% of those over 65 in the state of Texas have been fully vaccinated against COVID

The new Omicron COVID variant is likely more transmissible according to the CDC and has recently been discovered in Texas. Some medical professionals are asking residents to follow CDC guidelines and get vaccinated.
