Our Mount Rushmore for today: Horror Movie Franchises

When we pick our topics for Mount Rushmore Mondays we try to narrow it down without becoming TOO specific. So, with Halloween next week, we wanted to do something scary. Instead of leaving it wide open with, say, “Monsters” we decided to do Horror Movie Franchises That Have at Least 3 Movies. You could make the case that “Frankenstein” is a more famous monster (he’s been a part of pop culture for over 200 years ) but we wanted to focus in more on the movie characters that actually scared US when we were growing up. Let’s face it: nobody over the age of 5 has been legit “scared” of Frankenstein since Karloff was still alive. Ditto Dracula and the Wolfman.

Here’s what we came up with:

  • Michael Myers from “Halloween”

This remorseless killing machine kick-started the slasher genre with his first appearance in 1978. Jason Voorhees is sort of Michael Myers in a hockey mask instead of a William Shatner mask (true fact!)

  • Jason Voorhees from “Friday the 13th”

Technically, Jason’s mom Pamela is the killer in the 1980 movie. It was a really good plot twist but after the movie became a hit they realized “Hey, we need to make 30 more of these and we can’t have a middle aged grieving mother as our big, bad heavy” and, voila, they ret-conned Jason back to life.

  • Freddy Krueger from “A Nightmare on Elm Street”

“The son of a hundred homicidal maniacs” is what we find out about Freddy’s backstory in A Nightmare on Elm Street3: Dream Warriors. The original looks a little silly when you watch it today and the series DID get sillier and sillier as it went on (don’t forget that time Freddy rapped with The Fat Boys.

  • Ghost Face from “Scream”

If you have an issue with this choice, take it up with Joanna (@joannabarbacoa on Instagram).

I wanted Leather Face but, noooooo….
