  • The song was first performed by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell for the movie The Lemon Drop Kid.
    • It was filmed in July-August of 1950. And the film was released in March of 1951.
  • The first recording of the song was by Bing Crosby and Carol Richards, released in October of 1950.
  • After the success of the Bing Crosby and Carol Richards version of the song, Hope and Maxwell were called back to refilm a more elaborate production of the song.
  • The original title of the song was Tinkle Bells, because the Evans and Livingston didn't realize the double meaning. It wasn't until Livingston told his wife about the song that she informed him that "tinkle" also means urination.
  • It's not known which "bells" were the inspiration for the song but...
    • In interviews with Jay Livingston, he claims the inspiration came from the bells rang by Santas and Salvation Army solicitors on New York street corners.
