Here’s Who’s Been #Metoo’d This Week

There are 3 #Metoo accusations that are making the news this week. Here are the bare bones of each allegation.

1.) Chris Matthews

• Who?----- ----------The host of Hardball on MSNBC for over 20 years
• The Accusations---Casually sexist remarks about women’s appearances both on and off air
• The Evidence-------Well, he did a LOT of it on-air. And, he admits it.

• The Fallout----------Abruptly quit during his show last night.

2.) Timothy Hutton

• Who?-------------Youngest Best Supporting Oscar winner ever. Starred in “Taps”, “The Falcon and the Snowman” and, more recently, “The Haunting of Hill House” on Netflix.
• The Accusation---A woman has accused Hutton of raping her in a Vancouver hotel room in 1983 when she was 14 years old.

• The Evidence----So far, the accusers word. Also, a friend of the accusers who claims she was there. In addition, four more people have told Buzzfeed they were told of the incident many years prior.
• The Fallout--------Hutton denies the allegations and denies ever meeting the woman. Hutton had been in a Fox show called “Almost Family” that was canceled yesterday after just one season. It is unknown if the cancellation had anything to do with the accusations.

3.) Li Shang

• Who?--------------Mulan’s military commander and eventual love interest in the original Disney movie. I think you see where this is going.
• The Accusation—Using his position of authority to get Mulan into a consensual sexual relationship with him.
• The Evidence-----Yeah, it’s right there in the movie. Mulan does, indeed, fall in love with her commanding officer and they are eventually married in a ceremony officiated by Mushu.

• The Fallout------- In the upcoming live-action adaptation, Li Shang will be split into two separate characters: a wise but completely platonic mentor who is Mulan’s superior officer…and a younger soldier of similar rank who will be the love interest. Were these kind of relationships approved of back in 6th century? Who knows?! The only cultural norms that matter are the ones currently in favor at this exact moment! Get that through your heads or pay the penalty!
