San Angelo, Abilene and Midland have been working together for the past ten years to come up with a long-term deal that meets the city’s water supply needs.

Well, today a 50 year deal has been signed for a groundwater supply contract with Fort Stockton Holdings for water to be pumped from the Edwards-Trinity aquifer.

The cities negotiated this agreement with Fort Stockton Holdings, the owner of substantial groundwater rights in far West Texas, for groundwater pumped from the Edwards-Trinity aquifer.

San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter said “In the 1970s, our City leaders worked to secure an additional water supply from the Hickory aquifer for the next generations. That’s exactly what we’re doing now with this additional source of water. We are ensuring that there will be a reliable water supply for generations to come.”

The cities have worked together to consider many options over the past decade and have found Fort Stockton Holdings capable of providing a supply of water that meets the necessary criteria: affordability, quantity, quality, sustainability and reliability.
