I'm new in San Angelo.  I know there aren't as many trees here as there are in other parts of the country. I admit this is the time of the year when I feel most homesick for my home state of West Virginia.  The Fall foliage in the hills there can be quite spectacular.

So, will Fall here in San Angelo be a complete washout when it comes to Fall color?

Not exactly.  For one thing, Fall color arrives here in West Texas much later than in points north.  While New England hits it's peak in early October, what Fall colors arrive in West Texas will arrive in November.  The weather will play a part in it.  If it continues warm and dry, Fall color here will not be as dramatic. It will also come late, like Thanksgiving late.

So what are the best weather conditions to bring out optimum color. Generally, crisp cool nights and bright sunny days are the trigger for fall foliage.  If we continue to have above average temperatures and dry conditions, expect our fall color to be muted come November.  Early frosts and huge wind events can have a negative impact.

They call San Angelo the "oasis of West Texas". Because of the Concho River and the trees here, San Angelo is one of the best places in this entire region to see bright Fall colors if you are patient enough to wait until November.  The River Walk will be spectacular this year, barring any unforeseen weather changes.

In the meantime, grab a pumpkin, or a pumpkin spice latte, enjoy a football game,  take a trip through the corn maze and enjoy our version of Fall here in San Angelo.  Sure, it can mean well over 90 degree days for most of the season.  However, true Fall is coming and hopefully it will be worth the wait.
