A couple weeks after revealing positive COVID-19 cases across numerous sports programs, Texas Tech University has now shed light on exact numbers for its football team.

In a press release Friday afternoon (June 26th) from Texas Tech Director of Athletics Communications Matthew Dowdy, the school said that out of 197 coronavirus tests, 23 members of the football program tested positive. The testing included both student-athletes and staff. Dowdy added that of the 23 people who had contracted the coronavirus, 21 of them have recovered to date.

On June 15th, the university revealed that positive COVID-19 cases were confirmed in their football, women's basketball and men's track and field programs. One week earlier, the school confirmed cases within its men's basketball program.

The university previously declined to reveal how many COVID-19 cases were confirmed across its athletic programs, while other schools, including the University of Texas, were more upfront with their own case counts.

Below is Texas Tech University's full press release:

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics announced Friday it has completed 197 tests for COVID-19 among its football student-athletes and staff with a total of 23 positive results. Of the positive results, 21 recoveries have since been reported.

As part of its established safety protocols, Texas Tech’s sports medicine staff has notified and isolated each individual who tested positive for a period of at least 10 days in accordance with CDC guidelines and City of Lubbock Health Department procedures, including contact tracing. Close known contacts have also been asked to self-quarantine for 14 days. None of the cases have required hospitalization.

Texas Tech’s priority remains the health and safety of each of its student-athletes and staff. As part of its Return to Campus Plan, Texas Tech tested each football student-athlete upon return to campus. The same protocol will be implemented for each program as its student-athletes return for voluntary activity.

Earlier Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott backtracked on his reopening plans for Texas due to a recent statewide spike in COVID-19 cases. Gov. Abbott has ordered all bars to close their doors again and downgraded the capacity for restaurants, among other actions.

On June 23rd, Lubbock County set a single-day record of new COVID-19 cases: 140. A day later, Texas Tech University announced that face masks are now required on campus in an attempt to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
