Saturday is Talk Like A Pirate Day – Eyepatches Optional
Avast, ye mateys. Saturday (09.19.20) be international Talk Like A Pirate Day. I feel imminently qualified to bring this to your attention as I have my Official Pirate papers from my time aboard the Black Dragon. She's a beauty of a ship and crew that terrorizes seafaring folk along the Texas gulf coast out of Port Isabel. (Actually it was a fun way to spend the afternoon and if you're ever down around Port Isabel or South Padre Island I strongly recommend it.)
That's right, once a year we get to annoy our family, friends, and oftentimes coworkers with random outbursts of, "Shiver me timbers" and calling your best friend a "Bilge rat!"
If you're replying to your boss or supervisor you could even say, "Aye, Cap'n."
Talk Like A Pirate day began in 1995 and came about over a game of racquetball. What happened was this, John Baur and Mark Summers (a.k.a. Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy) were playing racquetball to work off a few pounds and generally improve their health when without reason or forethought they began encouraging each other in pirate-ese. It turned out to be a lot of fun and eventually became International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
There are websites with tips on pirate parlance, and here's a shorrrrrrrt video giving you some tips on how to Talk Like A Pirate.
Some fun things to do are to go to the public library and ask for the current location of Moby Dick, orrrrr ask the barista at the coffee shop if they can make change for gold bullion.
And above all else, remember that the word is "Arrrrrrrrr." Not "Arrrrrrgh." That's something Charlie Brown says when Lucy moves the football ... again.
Just be alert as to when it's time to back off orrrrrrr someone might just make ye walk the plank.
"Aye" will see myself out now.
