The Perseid meteor shower will take place tonight, August 12th, and August 13th. WTRF says the best time to view the shower is around 3AM. Find someplace away from the city lights, and enjoy. It's supposed to be spectacular.

According to NASA, every 133 years the Swift-Tuttle comet makes its way through our solar system, and Earth passes through the debris left behind. Hence, the light show. Did you know the reason they named the meteors 'Perseid'  is because they appear to come from the constellation Perseus. He's a Greek hero, and you can read all about him here.

This year is perfect for viewing the meteor shower because the moon in new, so there will not be a lot of light to reduce the visibility like last year. Bill Cooke, NASA's Meteoroid Environmental Office says,

This year’s Perseid meteor shower peaks on August 12th and 13th. The Moon will be nearly new, setting the stage for a great display. We expect meteor rates as high as 100 per hour on peak night.
