September 11, 2001. A date we’ll never forget. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day, and the images of the Twin Towers falling, the smoke rising from the Pentagon, and the crash in Pennsylvania are forever seared into history.

I can still hear the voices from those tragic voicemail messages the news kept playing that day. Passengers calling their loved ones to say “I love you.” That tragedy left a mark on me. Even now, flying gives me anxiety. I always pay attention to all the exits, and while I can’t stand waiting in TSA lines, I’m grateful for the security measures that help keep us safe.

Every anniversary of 9/11 I find myself having a conversation with someone about whether we remember what we were doing when we found out about 9/11 and whenever I share my story it takes me back and I start feeling those emotions all over again.

I Was Just a Teen on 9/11—Here’s What I Still Remember 24 Years Later

I was just a freshman in high school. My sister had to be at school early for volleyball practice, so I left to school with her in our parents’ van, the kind with those little flip-down TVs that felt so high-tech back then. While she headed into practice, I stayed behind and turned on Good Morning America. That’s when I saw it. A plane had hit the World Trade Center. At first, I thought it was just some tragic accident. But then the second plane hit, and suddenly, the entire world shifted.

When the school day started, everything felt… off. Teachers turned on TVs, and instead of lessons, we just sat there watching the news unfold. The classrooms were quiet in a way I’ll never forget. None of us really understood the magnitude of what we were witnessing, but we knew it was history.

Now, 24 years later, I understand the heartbreak, the bravery, the resilience that came after that day. Back then, I didn’t fully get it. But now, I do. And like so many others, I’ll always remember where I was when the world changed because we promised we would never forget.
