HOME SAFETY TIPS

Before we get into winterizing your home, you should sign up for calls and texts from your local emergency notifications system. This will keep you ahead of extreme weather.

Stocking up on supplies is a must. Before a winter storm, get important supplies like firewood, canned goods, bottled water, and medication. I know everything in you wants to buy a surplus of paper goods but that is not on the urgent list.

Cover outside faucets so they don't freeze. Freezing pipes can lead to a pipe burst, which can lead to a whole slew of problems. If you can't get a cover, a small trickle from the faucet could prevent the pipes from freezing.

Do not heat your home with a gas oven or stove because they produce carbon monoxide. CO is invisible, odorless, and a tasteless gas that can poison you and your family. If you decide to use space heaters, keep them 3 feet away from the walls and anything flammable.

Texas DPS also suggests checking on your family and friends whose health or age may put them in greater danger during the winter weather. Staying informed about weather conditions could help not just you but the people around you,
