As we enter the official winter months here in Texas, we know it's going to be cold. The temperatures drop, and that creates numerous issues every year. Power lines freeze, then they go down because of too much ice on them, etc.

We lose power for hours, sometimes days. Maybe the heat goes out in your house on a day where it's 15-20 degrees outside. What do you do until you can get it back on?

Worst case scenario, 2021 happens all over again, and history has shown at some point it will. Now what? Your food supply was low to begin with and you didn't go shopping before the storm hit. Now, roads are impossible to navigate or the stores shelves are pretty much empty.

So here are a few tips to be able to survive the winter months and be ready for anything.

Have a flashlight or two on hand, along with extra batteries to power them. If you lose power for days, you're going to want this as night sets in. I remember we only had one flashlight during the storm of 2021, but thankfully we had a lot of candles. Provided heat AND light.

Stock up on sustainable foods and water. If the power goes out, so does your fridge. There's a good chance that stuff is going to spoil if the power is out TOO long. Plus, how are you going to cook it without power? You'd be stuck on the grill in freezing temps.

Water is just smart to have on hand. Pipes freeze, we found that out quickly. If they freeze and the temps don't get warm enough to unfreeze them, you have ZERO water. Bad idea.

A heat source, and the fuel needed to run it. Got a fireplace? Make sure you have plenty of wood. Got a heater that runs on gas? Make sure you've got enough gas to power it for several days. It'll take those fuel carriers a few extra days to reach the city to restock fuel.

Make sure you've loaded up with blankets and other things to stay warm in your car. If you find yourself stranded for some reason, it's going to be important that you stay as warm as possible until you can move again. That includes extra clothing so you can stay dry if the clothes you're wearing get wet.

There are many other things you should focus on having or making sure you have, but these five things will certainly help you get through just about any winter weather situation.
