If you were planning a road trip based on food alone, there are a few states you’d probably skip without much debate. No offense to West Virginia or the Dakotas--but nobody’s booking a vacation just for the dinner options.

Now Texas? That’s a different story.

A new survey of 5,000 Americans ranked the states with the best food in the country, and Texas landed exactly where most of us expected--right near the top. But we shoulda been number one!

Texas Ranks Third for Best Food in America

According to the survey, California took the top spot for best food overall, followed by New York. But coming in at No. 3 was Texas, beating out heavy hitters like Louisiana and Florida.

Here’s how the Top 5 shook out:

  1. California

  2. New York

  3. Texas

  4. Louisiana

  5. Florida

For a state that treats brisket like a religion and considers queso a food group, third place feels like a slap in the face.

Why Texas’ Food Reputation Is So Strong

Texas food isn’t just one thing--it’s everything.

We’ve got:

  • BBQ that sparks family arguments

  • Tex-Mex that locals defend with a passion

  • Steaks that don’t need explaining

  • Comfort food that sticks with you

From small-town diners to big-city kitchens, Texas food is built on bold flavors and zero apologies. And whether it’s tacos for breakfast or brisket for dinner (or breakfast), the variety is part of what makes the state stand out nationally.

Locals Know What They’ve Got

Interestingly, the survey also looked at which state residents were most confident that their food was the best.

That honor went to Louisiana--and honestly, that tracks. When you’ve got gumbo, crawfish, and jambalaya, confidence comes naturally.

Texas didn’t take that title, but let’s be real: Texans don’t need a survey to tell them their food is elite. We already know.

The States Americans Aren’t Traveling For Food

On the flip side, the survey named several states with the “most unimpressive cuisine.” Among them:

  • West Virginia

  • North Dakota

  • South Dakota

  • Wyoming

  • Nebraska

  • Montana

  • Utah

  • Vermont

No shade--but these aren’t exactly states people circle on a map when planning a food-focused trip.

How Long Americans Spend Eating

One fun bonus stat from the survey:

  • New Yorkers spend the most time eating, averaging 52 minutes a day

  • Arkansas residents eat the fastest, averaging 41 minutes a day

Texas didn’t land at either extreme. We take our time when the food’s good--and in Texas, it usually is.

Texas cracking the Top 3 best food states in America shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s ever eaten here. Whether it’s smoked, fried, grilled, or smothered in queso, Texas food isn’t just about feeding people--it’s about doing it RIGHT.
