The Sad History of Texas Artist Selena and April Fool’s Day
Today is April Fool's Day and hopefully you don't fall for a fake story. Sadly, a bunch of folks thought this story was fake back in the day, but it turned out to be real.
March 31, 1995
Sadly yesterday is the anniversary of Tejano artist Selena Quintanilla being murdered by her fan club manager Yolanda Saldívar. Back on March 31, 1995 Selena confronted Yolanda about embezzling money from her. Fans had paid for membership into a Selena fan club and had received nothing in return. During the confrontation at a Days Inn in Corpus Christi, Yolanda pulled a gun on Selena and fired a shot that severed one of her arteries. Selena suffered a massive blood loss and was officially declared dead at 1:05 PM on March 31, 1995.
April 1, 1995
Many folks in Corpus Christi found out about this story on March 31 because Yolanda had a nine hour standoff with the FBI after she shot Selena. Many folks did not find about her death until the next day. Which sadly left many Texans to believe this was an April Fool's Prank. This is actually not the first time this has happened in popular culture.
Marvin Gaye's Death in 1984
Just over a decade prior to Selena's death, was the death of Marvin Gaye. News reports came out on April 1st, 1984 that Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father. At the time, many folks believed it was an April Fool's Prank once again.
Hopefully you don't fall for a fake story today, but remember. Real stories also can happen on April Fool's Day as well.
