Groundhog Day Faceoff As Groundhog Goes Up Against Texas Wildlife
Every year we engage in the odd tradition of letting an animal predict whether we get an early spring, or if we get to see several more weeks of winter. Across the nation, eyes are on the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil. In parts of Texas, the prognostication is left in the shadow of an armadillo named Bee Cave Bob. In Amarillo, Texas, we have Remy.
Three Weather Predicting Animals Steal The Show In February
Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, is hands down the nation's most famous weather forecaster on four legs. Film crews from all over the US flock to document the spectacle of the groundhog coming out of his hole to predict the arrival of spring.
In Texas, we like to do things our own way and that even goes for weather-predicting animals. The Lone Star State largely leaves the forecasting to an Armadillo named Bee Cave Bob. It has been argued that Bob is the most accurate out of all the weather-predicting animals that do their work on February 2. He even predicts political leanings so you get more bang for your buck.
In Amarillo, Texas, there is another tiny prognosticator that goes by the name of Remy. Remy is this year's honorary groundhog who happens to be a prairie dog.
Will We See An Early Spring Or Six More Weeks Of Winter?
For 2025, we don't have a unanimous prediction of early spring or more winter. We have a 2 to 1 split. Here's how it went down on Feb 2:
- Punxsutawney Phil - Six More Weeks Of Winter
- Bee Cave Bob - Early Spring
- Remy - Six More Weeks Of Winter
If you buy into this sort of thing, it looks like the going prediction is six more weeks of winter. Phil saw his shadow, and according to the Amarillo Zoo, so did Remy.
Bee Cave Bob, on the other hand, maintaining that rugged individuality that Texas is known for, predicted an early spring.
