Longview Man Sentenced to Life for Third DWI Conviction

A Longview man has been sentenced to life in prison after receiving his third conviction for driving while intoxicated (DWI), according to the Gregg County District Attorney's Office. The sentencing came down last Wednesday, July 15, when the Gregg County jury sentenced Jeffry Scott Webb to life in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice; the trial lasted two days in the 124th District Court.

Jury Reaches Guilty Verdict in Less Than an Hour

Prosecutors said that the jury took less than 45 minutes to find Webb guilty of driving while intoxicated for the third time. While the punishment phase was going on, jurors heard more about Webb's criminal history, including multiple prior DWI convictions and two previous prison sentences. The jury then decided on the life sentence as punishment.

Witness Report Led Officers to the Motel

The conviction came from an incident that took place at the Majestic Inn in Longview. Prosecutors say that they originally received a report of an intoxicated driver at the motel. A witness told officers that a man had driven his vehicle through the parking lot before parking and stumbling from his vehicle to a motel room.

Officers were able to contact the suspect who was identified as Webb inside the motel room identified by the witness, and authorities say that at that time Webb was showing several signs of intoxication.

Surveillance Video Confirmed Investigators' Case

Investigators reviewed motel surveillance and testified they saw Webb driving in the parking lot before exiting the vehicle and staggering toward a stairwell.

Webb performed field sobriety tests, and after receiving information from officers, Judge Angie Konczak approved a search warrant for a blood draw. After the testing was completed at the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory, Webb's blood-alcohol concentration was 0.272, more than three times the legal limit.
