How Texans Know When Winter Is Over (No Weatherman Required)

In Texas, especially in the West, folks don’t need a calendar or a meteorologist to tell them winter is over. Instead, they rely on Mother Nature’s cues, signs passed down through generations.

My wife, Donna, grew up learning these signs from her grandfather, a hardworking farmer and rancher. He never had a meteorology degree or even a high school diploma, but he could predict the last cold day of winter better than any weather forecast. And according to Donna, those lessons still hold true today.

Just recently, as we pulled out of our driveway on the way to church, Donna spotted tiny green buds sprouting on the old mesquite tree in our yard. Without hesitation, she turned to me and said, “It’s time to start the lawnmower, winter’s over.”

I laughed and asked if she had suddenly become a meteorologist. She smiled and said, “Nope, but my granddad had a degree in Mother Nature.”

Curious, I pressed on for more details, and she laid out the unmistakable signs her grandfather always looked for, the same ones that convinced me she was absolutely right. it may have taken me some time but I learned not to argue with my wife and I think she likes hearing me say, "yes, you're right dear!"
