12 Must Hike Texas State Parks: One for Every Month!
One thing that's for sure is that our Texas State Parks are nothing short of incredible. I’ve only hiked three parks so far, but each time, the experience has been breathtaking. If you’re like me and find yourself addicted to the beauty of these parks, why not challenge yourself to hike a different one every month for a year? I’ve made a promise to myself now that I’ve written this, to visit the other nine parks on my list.
With the scorching summer we’ve had in West Texas, hiking might be the last thing on your mind. But as the temperatures start to cool, now is the perfect time to plan your hiking adventures across the Lone Star State. The Texas Parks and Wildlife officials are always eager to show off the state’s natural beauty, and these parks are prime examples.
Below, I’ve included 12 great videos showcasing some of Texas' most awe-inspiring state parks with incredible hiking trails. As my dad always told me, “Son, pick your battles wisely,” and that’s exactly what you’ll need to do when choosing which trails to tackle and when. The three parks I’ve hiked so far, Possum Kingdom, Big Bend, and Palo Duro were unforgettable, but I’m excited to explore the others on this list.
Preparing for Your Hike
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a rookie like me, it’s essential to review these trails first and make a 12-month hiking plan. A word to the wise: before setting off on any hike, make sure you’re in good health and prepared for the journey.
Essential Safety Tips
As a former Boy Scout, I learned a valuable lesson: always be prepared. This means wearing the right hiking shoes, dressing appropriately, and packing a backpack with all the essentials. Don’t forget to include a first aid kit and plenty of water, your safety is the most important part of hiking.
