Texas Tree Farms Are Growing Fast — Start a New Holiday Tradition
You wouldn’t think Christmas trees could thrive in a place where winter days sometimes hit the 80s, even the 90s, but Texas is full of surprises. Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Commissioner Sid Miller says the Texas Christmas tree industry is growing faster than ever, even while tree farms nationwide are declining.

According to new data from the Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas jumped from 125 growers in 2017 to 220 growers farming more than 3,500 acres in 2022. Families are also choosing more real trees, up 26% from just a few years ago.
TDA Commissioner Sid Miller, Why Buying Texas-Grown Trees Matters
Commissioner Miller says buying a Texas-grown tree is more than picking out holiday décor. It keeps money in local communities, supports hardworking farmers, and continues traditions that families like mine cherish (I still remember taking my kids to Millican’s years ago to cut our own tree, a memory we’ll never forget).
Texas growers have spent years developing seed stock that can handle our wild weather swings, resulting in stronger, healthier trees built for the Lone Star climate. And many farms now offer full holiday experiences, hayrides, Santa visits, hot cocoa, photo ops, and more.
