National Pepperoni Pizza Day: A Slice of American History and Flavor

Pepperoni, America’s favorite pizza topping, might surprise you. Though often thought of as an Italian classic, pepperoni was actually invented by Italian immigrants in New York City around 1919. They combined ground salami with paprika and chili peppers, creating this zesty sausage that has become a pizza icon.

While pepperoni's roots are firmly planted in the U.S., it quickly became a nationwide sensation, with everyone from New York to Texas craving that crispy, cup-shaped topping. Today, pepperoni pizza is a must-have in any pizzeria, dominating 36% of all pizza orders.

I wanted to know what pizza flavor is the "Texas Favorite," so I asked listeners on our stations app and our social pages "What is you favorite pizza flavor?". Lo and behold, without a doubt Texans love pepperoni pizzas mind you there is a difference in crust choices but Pepperoni Pizza is #1.

I believe that Texans love pepperoni for the way pepperoni is made with chili peppers and other spices, much like a lot of our Tex-Mex foods. Below our some responses from listeners all throughout West Texas. If you didn't get to vote for yours jump on the stations app and text us, "What's your favorite pizza flavor?"

A Slice of Pizza History

Did you know pizza didn’t even exist until June 18, 1889? That’s when Chef Rafael Esposito created a pie for Queen Margherita of Italy, which we now call Margherita pizza, featuring tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella. While Margherita pizza may have royal origins, pepperoni has become the true people's champion.
