Abilene Police to Crack Down on Illegal Activities During Cruise Night

After speaking with Sergeant Mason of the Abilene Police Department (APD) Traffic Division, I learned that many of the actions people are taking on the roads across Texas are highly illegal, including during the much-anticipated Cruise Night. In a previous report during spring Cruise Night, I mentioned that some behaviors were questionable, but it turns out they’re not just questionable, they’re flat-out illegal!

Cruise Night: More Than Just Fun—It’s About Safety

Sgt. Mason cleared up several questions I had about what’s permissible during Cruise Night. Some of the stunts "cruisers" pull may seem harmless, but BEWARE, this upcoming Cruise Night, the Abilene Police Department will be out in full force, and violators can expect citations.

"Rolling Coal" Will Cost You Big Time

So, what laws are we talking about? First, there’s "Rolling Coal," when a diesel vehicle emits a thick cloud of black exhaust. Not only is this illegal locally, but it’s also a federal violation. And YES, the APD will be issuing tickets. The fine for the first offense starts at $350 and only escalates from there.

Tire Burnouts: Dangerous and Costly

Then there’s the matter of tire burnouts, more illegal and far more dangerous. This reckless behavior doesn’t just lead to hefty fines, but could also result in the suspension of your driver’s license if combined with other offenses. I remember the last time I saw some fool attempting a burnout, his car flung rubber that hit a nearby power line, causing sparks to fly and forcing the Abilene Fire Department and the electric company to respond. That driver ended up not only with a ticket but a bill for the repairs.

Other Common Violations to Avoid

Other common violations include excessive speed, exhibition of speed, and excessive noise from vehicles without mufflers. Law enforcement will be "cruising" right alongside us this year, and they WILL be issuing citations and running license plates to ensure everyone is legal and safe.

Keep It Legal and Enjoy Cruise Night

Remember, if something feels wrong or illegal while you’re cruising, it probably is. Let’s all keep it cool and enjoy the classic rides that bring us back to the good ol’ days, without risking a run-in with the law.
