Abilene is officially kicking off the holiday season in the most magical way possible. Mayor Weldon Hurt has announced that the City of Abilene is now taking the reins on one of our most beloved traditions, Downtown Christmas, featuring the City Hall Christmas Tree Lighting and the Parade of Lights on Tuesday, December 2. This isn’t just another event; it’s a full evening of community pride, lights, and West Texas Christmas spirit.

The Magic Begins With the City Hall Tree Lighting

The celebration starts at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of Abilene City Hall at 555 Walnut Street, where families can gather for holiday music and a warm community welcome. Mayor Hurt will take the stage at 6 p.m. to lead the official countdown as a massive, beautifully lit Christmas tree comes to life. This moment alone is worth bundling up the kids and heading downtown early, it sets the tone for everything that follows.

The Parade of Lights Takes Over Downtown

At 6:30 p.m., the streets of Downtown Abilene will glow as dozens of illuminated floats, performers, and holiday characters roll through the Parade of Lights. This year’s route follows North 1st Street, Walnut, North 6th, and Pine, a slight shift due to the Cypress Street Improvement Project.

Expect bright lights, creative floats, music, and of course, a visit from Santa himself. Nearly 20,000 people typically attend, making it one of the biggest celebrations in the Big Country.

How to Take Part in the Celebration

Local businesses, schools, churches, and organizations can still take part by visiting AbileneChristmas.com for float applications, volunteer info, and event details. Parade entries are limited by ordinance, so early registration is key.

A True Celebration of Community

Downtown Christmas is more than a parade, and it’s a moment for all of us in West Texas to come together, celebrate the season, and make memories that last a lifetime. Mayor Hurt said it best: “Let’s make this a season you won’t forget.”
