Every Mother’s Day in our house started the same way. Flowers, maybe a plant, opening a few gifts, and then came the big question:

“Where do you want to go eat, Mom?”

Truth is, we never knew.

We’d get her in the car, seatbelt on, and then let her decide. And almost every year, she’d pick one of her favorite Abilene spots, the places where so many family memories were made.

Golden Corral Was Always a Favorite

There was just something about Golden Corral that made everybody happy. No stress, no debating, just a table full of food and a mom who could pick whatever she wanted.

Red Lobster Meant It Was a Special Day

When Mom chose Red Lobster, you knew it wasn’t just another meal. It felt like an occasion. Something a little nicer, a little different, and always worth it.

Casa Herrera or Farolito’s, It Was Always a Tie

We could never quite predict which one she’d choose, but either way, we knew we were in for great food, laughter, and that loud, warm family atmosphere that just felt like home.

Cracker Barrel Meant Slowing Down

Cracker Barrel wasn’t just about eating. It was about taking our time. Sitting a little longer. Talking a little more. No rushing, just being together.

Dairy Queen Was Always Part of the Day

Mom loved her Dairy Queen, no doubt about that. Sometimes it was the stop, sometimes it was just part of the plan, but somehow, DQ always found its way into Mother’s Day.

And Then Came Dessert

After presents and dinner, we usually made one more stop.

That meant heading to places like Snow White Bakery, Super Duper, or McKay’s Bakery to pick up her favorite, pecan pie and Blue Bell ice cream.

Some of those places are gone now, and that’s the part that really hits you.

Because it’s not just about the buildings, it’s about the memories we made walking through those doors.

Mother’s Day was never really about where we went.

It was about who we were with.

And for me, those Abilene restaurants will always remind me of Mom.
