Grandson continues to unleash new music with a social conscious behind it, deciding to put a fresh spin on the Rage Against the Machine song "Maria."

The original, which appeared on Rage's 1999 album The Battle of Los Angeles, was a more aggressive, heavy song punctuated by Brad Wilk's drumming and Tom Morello's guitar licks. Grandson's new version turns it into a more somber and bluesy effort, though it retains some of the attitude and grit of the original in spots. Speaking about the approach he took with the song, Grandson revealed on Twitter, "The intention was to juxtapose a story of Mexican migration/indentured servitude with Delta Deep South American blues as a commentary on slave labor and the perversion of the American Dream. What’s more American than that?"

Grandson does have ties to Rage, with Tom Morello remixing his breakout single "Blood // Water" last year. The musician is currently on tour in Europe. See his upcoming dates and get ticket information here.
