Godsmack Show Support for James Hetfield: He’s an Icon to Us — Interview
The rock and metal community have been very supportive of Metallica frontman James Hetfield ever since the recent news broke that he was going back to rehab. Many artists have spoken out about their struggles with addiction to relate to Papa Het, including the members of Godsmack.
"I'm an alcoholic, sober for three and a half years now," Larkin said. "Just the day before yesterday, I even texted [Erna], 'A shot of Jack would be nice.'...Every day you gotta check yourself if you're an alcoholic, and James is. I know he has admitted it, so I feel for him right now, man."
He explained how addiction and alcoholism are diseases, and how musicians often need to check themselves into rehab in order to fully stray away from partying. "But then you get thrown back on this fantasy land that we're out here in, that's surrounded by partying. That's what we do, and we're the host of the party, so now you're feeling weird that you're not partying with the fans...So I understand, and I feel for James. He will get through it, he's a strong dude."
"I'm sure he's like, 'Man I gotta go through this again now,'" Erna adds. "He's a good dude man, unfortunately he has a bad disease. We all believe in him and all love him, he's been an inspiration, icon and mentor to all of us over the years and we send out our best love and wishes that he gets well soon, and gets back on track for himself, his band and his family."
