Embezzlement Trial Begins for U2 Bassist Adam Clayton’s Former Assistant

The trial of the former housekeeper and personal assistant of U2 bassist Adam Clayton got under way today (June 7) in Ireland.

Carol Hawkins, who worked for Clayton for 16 years, is accused of having stolen almost 3 million Euros (approximately $3.7 million U.S.) from Clayton between 2004 and 2008. Hawkins has reportedly admitted using Clayton’s credit cards and taking approximately $16,500 of his money without authorization.

As we reported in late February, Clayton is also suing Bank of Ireland Private Banking and the accounting firm Gaby Smyth & Co.

U2 manager Paul MacGuiness sat in the public gallery yesterday in a show of support for Clayton.

Judge Patrick McCartan swore in a jury of seven men and five women for the trial which will involve more than 30 witnesses and an astounding 2,500 page book of evidence.

The trial is expected to last six weeks.
