The state of Texas hasn't had a Democratic candidate win a seat in the Senate in almost 30 years. Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat from El Paso is looking to change that. Earlier this year Beto had announced his plan to run against incumbent Ted Cruz, and he's now officially filed the paperwork.

O'Rourke said on Monday:

“Today’s filing is not only a chance to recommit ourselves to this critical race, but to recommit to running it in the right way: being present, accountable, candid, transparent and powering each step of the way by people not PACs.”

Despite seemingly having a bunch of momentum now and really, really early polls showing the two tied or even some showing Beto in the lead, O'Rourke has an uphill battle ahead of him.

O'Rourke has raised nearly $2.8 million for his campaign. That sounds like a lot, but not when you compare it to the $5.7 million Cruz has raised already. And with a tough Senate map for the party, it's not likely Beto's campaign will be a top fundraising priority for Democrats nationally next year. Democrats have 10 seats in the Senate they need to defend in states that Trump carried in last year's election.
