Deer And Turkey Seasons Open This Saturday

Get ready for the 2020-21 hunting season which The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has predicted will offer a plentiful population of white-tailed deer in many regions across the state.

First by purchasing new hunting and fishing licenses, which expired this year on August 31. Texas hunting licenses can be purchased online at TPWD.texas.gov or in about 1,800 retail locations across the state. The state offers license options for both resident and nonresidents. Permits are required for many game hunts, and can also be found online.

Texas’ Parks and Wildlife Department offers several beneficial programs for hunters. By purchasing a public hunting permit, hunters have access of close to one million acres of land. Texas has 49 Wildlife Management Areas available for hunting and recreational use.

Every hunter, including those from out of state, born on or after September 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Course to qualify for a license. Minimum age of certification is 9. Visit tpwd.texas.gov/oa/HunterEd for more information.

It is unlawful to hunt roosting turkeys by any means at any time or to release turkeys without department authorization.

All turkeys must be tagged with a tag from the hunter’s license immediately upon harvest, and in a secure manner anywhere on the turkey.

Tagging a Wild Turkey

A tag from the hunting license of the person who killed the turkey must be correctly and legibly completed (including name of property and county) and immediately attached to the animal.

The hunter MUST:

use the specific type of turkey tag

have the month and date of kill clearly cut out on the tag by notching the respective month and day. Do not “ink out.”
