Dave Mustaine: Dimebag + Vinnie Paul Could’ve Joined Megadeth
Pantera's late Dimebag Darrell almost joined Megadeth, according to Dave Mustaine. Mustaine recently recounted the experience with the Tampa Bay Times and mentioned the time he offered Darrell a guitar gig with Megadeth.
"He was a spectacle to watch. I actually called him up and asked him to play in Megadeth. Fate would have completely changed if I would have called him before I called Nick Menza," Mustaine recalls.
When he told Darrell he was looking for a guitar player, the Pantera legend asked in return if he could bring his brother Vinnie Paul along. "And I went, 'Who’s your brother?' He goes, 'Vinnie Paul! Don’t you know Vinnie Paul?' He wanted to bring his brother and have him play with us, and I go, 'Oh, man, I just hired Nick Menza,'" explained Mustaine.
"Can you imagine what Vinnie and Darrell would have been with me and Junior (bassist Dave Ellefson)," asks Mustaine. "Would’ve been pretty cool."
The world works in mysterious ways as Megadeth and Pantera are both huge bands, but a combination of the two would have been out of this world. Brothers Darrell and Vinnie are rocking in paradise together and are missed.
Megadeth have been working on a follow-up to 2016's Dystopia, which Mustaine says he had over 500 riffs written for. Stay tuned for more news on their upcoming release as it becomes available.
