Just days before the movie comes out on Digital HD, Avengers: Endgame finally achieved its true endgame.

It became the biggest movie in the history of movies.

Per Variety, on Saturday the film finally passed James Cameron’s Avatar to become the highest-grossing film in history. It now has slightly edged Avatar and its $2.7897 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Several months ago, Cameron congratulated Marvel and the Avengers team for passing Titanic, his other massive blockbuster, on the all-time list, which is now the third-biggest film in history. (Which is still, pretty good, all things considered.)

Of course, if you adjust these numbers for inflation, the biggest movie ever in the United States is Gone With the Wind, which grossed the equivalent of $1.82 billion back in 1939. (Avengers’ domestic total is $853.3 million and counting.) Still, $2.78 billion worldwide is a real, and really big number. It will probably be a while before we see anything come close to it — although with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker due in theaters this Christmas, maybe it won’t be that long after all.

James Cameron will get his own chance to reclaim his box-office champion title when his Avatar sequels begin coming out in 2021. Either way, the real winner here is Disney. They own Avengers and Star Wars and, now that they’ve purchased 20th Century Fox, they’re distributing the Avatar sequels too.
