Angelo State Coaches vs. Cancer 3 Point Challenge
The Angelo State men’s and women’s basketball teams have made a combined 235 three-pointers so far in the 2016-17 season, but starting this weekend those deep shots will have extra meaning as the Rams an Belles take part in the Coaches vs. Cancer 3-point Challenge.
For the month of February, the Rams and Belles are asking fans to pledge a dollar amount to donate for every three-pointer made by the two teams, with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
“Coaches vs. Cancer approached us and asked if we would like to be involved,” ASU head women’s basketball coach Kevin Baker said, “and of course we were all for it. They came up with the great idea of making three pointers and how much money that could make and I don’t know how you could turn that down. It’s a great opportunity to raise money and raise awareness, so we were all in.”
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Since 1993, coaches have raised more than $100 million for the American Cancer Society.
Fans can participate in the pledge drive for either the women or men or both by visiting https://pledgeit.org/cvc-angelo-state and https://pledgeit.org/cvc-angelo-state-women.
“For years we’ve been doing the Coaches vs. Cancer game where the coaches wear sneakers to help raise awareness, but this year they did a good job making us aware of the other things we could do,” ASU head men’s basketball coach Cinco Boone said. “Our team and staff is very excited about it. Cancer can affect everybody in one way or another, so to bring awareness and raise some money for this issue is something we are glad to do.”
