World’s Largest Game Collection Sells for Six Figures
The collection consists of over 11,000 games from every console generation, and was collected over three decades by Thomasson. Of the total, over 2,600 games are still shrink-wrapped, and over 8,300 are complete with manual and box. The winner will also receive the Guinness World Record certificate, as well as a lifetime subscription to Retro Magazine.
Thomasson explains how he came to possess so many games on the auction page, stating, "I operated seven independent gaming stores during the nineties and have worked for another chain for the last decade." He added, "I also operated Good Deal Games online since 1998, having thousands of games cross my path. Whenever I purchased a game that did not directly come from the distributor I was able to look through all our inventory and pick out the nicest copy of a game, including grabbing the nicest box and manual.”
The auction, which started at $1 on June 11, saw 56 bids in total, by 17 bidders. Once the price rose above $100,000, that narrowed to two bidders who rapidly increased the price. In fact, in a brief two minute period, the back-and-forth bids pushed it from $150K to $500K, more than tripling the value. The winning bidder, interestingly enough, has no feedback for previous purchases or sales on the auction site.
Sadly, Thomasson’s amazing collection was sold to help his family with an unspecified needs that “need to be addressed.” Just because Thomasson will be back to zero once all the games are shipped (over a six week period) doesn’t mean he’s done with the hobby. A confident Thomasson stated, "I've sold my collection many times in the past and still managed to capture Guinness' attention, and it is entirely possible that I may again.”
