As the record-breaking drought continues, Texas Water Smart urges residents of San Angelo to remember the critical need for continued water conservation during the hottest time of the year.
The lack of significant rainfall and scorching temperatures has put more pressure on existing water supplies, forcing cities and other water suppliers to implement water use restrictions that impact residents and businesses. Residents can lose investments in landscaping and gardening while businesses lose revenue when water restrictions are put in place. This can have a serious effect on the economy and quality of life in Texas. Water conservation is an economic issue and we may see businesses dry up if more is not done to conserve this precious resource.

While lawmakers are giving voters the chance this November to approve Proposition 6 and provide funding for our state’s long-term water plan, water conservation is still the immediate first line of defense against the drought.

To promote water conservation statewide, Texas Water Smart, a first of its kind public-private effort involving elected leaders, trade associations and businesses, has developed a program to educate businesses and families on how they can make a big difference by taking simple steps to conserve water during this current time of drought.

The Texas Water Smart conservation tips include:

·     Water your yard only in the morning or evening.

·     Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered.

·     Check outdoor faucets, sprinklers and hoses for leaks.

·     Use a thick layer of mulch in your planting beds.

·     Use watering cans for your patio plants.

·     Water your plants deeply, but less frequently.

·     Use drip irrigation or soaker hoses for shrubs and trees.

Texans must come together to combat this historic drought that is lasting longer than anyone could have predicted. A lack of water can translate into dried up businesses, which results in a loss of jobs, tax revenue and economic opportunity. Conserving water today not only helps ensure we have enough water for tomorrow, but also helps ensure we have enough water for the next generation of Texans.
