I watched Stranger Things front to back this weekend. I thought it was a great show. Well written, well acted, and the way it portrayed it as an 80's show was absolutely brilliant. And according to moviepilot.com there is some true stories that led to Stranger Things.

  1. Project MKUltra - "Can we get control of an individual to the point where he will do our bidding against his will and even against fundamental laws of nature, such as self-preservation?" That's an actual quote from a government memo. That was the beginning of Project Artichoke, which eventually became Project MKUltra, which was where hired prostitutes would lure men to CIA testing facilities and dose them with acid while scientists observed them from a safe distance.
  2. Subproject 68 - This was part of Project MKUltra. Dr. Ewen Cameron believed that you could break people down to the mental capacity of a baby, enabling him to then rebuild their personalities from the ground up.
  3. The Stargate Project - In 1978, the US Government looked into the possibility of psychic powers. They discontinued the work in 1995. The interesting thing is, even though they stopped the research, they did reveal that a statistically significant effect had been observed in the laboratory, suggesting that the existence of psychic powers shouldn't be dismissed entirely out of hand.
