On this day in rock history, Bruce Springsteen released an album that was never supposed to see the light of day. At least, not in its stripped-down configuration. Instead, the songs that comprised Nebraska were originally meant to work as guides for the expected full-bore rock assault to come by the E Street Band. But Springsteen grew to appreciate these stark tales in their equally stark original setting, and one of his most direct artistic statements was eventually issued unchanged.

Marc Bolan, the mastermind behind glam-rockers T. Rex, was born on this date, which much later saw a fight breakout among crew members during a concert featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blue Oyster Cult. A pair of important projects arrived in 1985 from Tom Waits and Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well.

Then, after a period of retrenchment that found Bob Dylan issuing not one but two albums of age-old cover tunes, he roared back to creative life with Time Out of Mind. The project marked a return to collaborating with producer Daniel Lanois, who had overseen Dylan's most complete album of the '80s, Oh Mercy.
