A local man was arrested yesterday afternoon for Burglary of a Habitation after police were alerted to suspicious activity at a local motel.
Just after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, San Angelo Police Sector 2 Patrol Officers T. Coffman and W. Montez were dispatched to the Days Inn Motel located at 4613 S. Jackson St. for the report of suspicious activity regarding a male subject who was reportedly entering motel rooms and removing property.  While the officers were enroute, dispatch received information from a witness that the subject left the area and was now at the Stripes Convenience Store located at 3925 S. Bryant Blvd.

Officer Coffman responded to the Stripes Store and located a man sitting behind the store.  The man, who matched the suspect’s description, was detained and identified as Leston Kade Heflin (DOB 09-21-89) of Mertzon, Texas.  A records check of Heflin showed he had an outstanding Felony Arrest Warrant for Theft of Service out of Travis County.  Officer T. Coffman then recognized Heflin as being a person of interest from another San Angelo Police Department investigation.  After learning about the nature of Heflin’s warrant and receiving additional details about the reported Burglary at the Days Inn, Officer Coffman requested a more detailed check of Heflin be conducted by the SAPD Crime Analysis Section.  The check revealed Heflin was linked to additional ongoing police department investigations.  Officer Coffman then requested the Criminal Investigations Division respond to the scene for further investigation.

After a lengthy field investigation, police learned Heflin was reportedly occupying a room at the motel without payment, and while at the property, reportedly gained entry into several other rooms and removed property that did not belong to him.  Some of the stolen property was eventually located at the scene and returned to one of the victim’s.  During a search of the room Heflin was reportedly occupying, police found items of clothing that were previously reported missing from another victim’s room.

Police transported Heflin to the police station for interview.  Heflin was subsequently charged for Burglary of a Habitation and his outstanding Arrest Warrant before his transport to the Tom Green County Jail.

This is an ongoing investigation and police believe additional cases may be resolved as a result of this investigation.  Special thanks to the citizens who reported the suspicious activity.  This is another great example of police-community partnership.
