San Angelo City Offices Closed for Memorial Day

Most City offices will be closed Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day.
While there will be no interruption of garbage collection or landfill operations Monday, there will be no residential trash service or landfill operations on Saturday, May 25. Affected residential customers will next receive pickup services Wednesday, May 29. On Memorial Day, only the Republic Services offices will be closed.

Southside and Carl Ray Johnson recreation centers, and Station 618 and Santa Fe Crossing senior centers will also be closed Monday.

At Fort Concho, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the fort will conduct Memorial Day exercises Monday, beginning at 9 a.m. on the Parade Ground in front of the Headquarters Building. John C. Smith of San Angelo, a retired U.S. Navy captain, will be the guest speaker. A Vietnam War veteran and decorated fighter pilot, Capt. Smith served on numerous aircraft carriers with more than 400 missions flown and 1,000 carrier landings while serving from 1957-75.

During the exercises, the Harmony Belles of San Angelo will perform patriotic music. The Fort Concho Living History Program and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans will perform the flag detail and provide an artillery salute. A reception with refreshments will take place at the end of the ceremony.

Fort Concho will remain open until 5 p.m. Monday for self-guided tours. The site’s new exhibit on Comanche Chief Quanah Parker in Barracks 1 will be available to all guests throughout the day. For more information, call Fort Concho at (325) 481-2646.

Love Municipal Pool opens for the Memorial Day weekend, with public swimming from noon to 8 p.m. Monday. Daily pool use begins June 1. Admission is $5 per person for ages 3-64, free for children younger than 3, and $3 for 65 and older. Season passes cost $75 per person or $200 for a family of four plus $25 for each additional family member. Season passes can be purchased at the Recreation offices, 702 S. Chadbourne St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Love Municipal Pool, 18 E. Avenue A, underwent a $3 million transformation in 2011, adding two large slides, spray toys, vortex pools and a beach entry before reopening last summer. The Works Progress Administration built the historic pool in 1938.

City offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 28.
