Recent NPD reports show that the PlayStation 4 has trumped the Xbox One yet again in terms of sales, while Wii U and PS Vita sales have been on the rise.

For the fifth month in a row, the PlayStation 4 has trumped the Xbox One in terms of systems sold, Joystiq reports. Based on the NPD Group's findings for May 2014, overall system/hardware sales were up 95 percent compared to May 2013. Most of the $187 million the gaming industry made in overall hardware sales for May 2014 was attributed to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sales, but Wii U and PS Vita sales have significantly grown compared to last year.

"Two examples of hardware bundles that helped to drive hardware sales in May 2014 include Mario Kart 8 bundle for the Wii U, and the Borderlands 2 bundle for the PS Vita," NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

We can also attribute some of the increased PS Vita sales to the time it takes for the average gamer to save up extra money for a new console after purchasing the PlayStation 4. Considering that the PS4 launched last November and the average gamer has likely purchased a handful games for it since then, it would take some time for PS4 users to find out about the Remote Play features of the Vita and to save up the money for it after buying a next-gen system. The Borderlands 2 bundle's debut last month, which includes the slim version of the Vita, played a pivotal role in the increased sales of the handheld as well.

The NPD Group claims that May 2014's software sales increased 57 percent compared to last year with over $274 million spent on actual games last month. The Group also claims that for the past six months, game sales have been on the decline compared to the previous year. Liam Callahan mentioned that the launches of Mario Kart 8, Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Watch Dogs, MLB 14: The Show and Kirby: Triple Deluxe being the main reasons why sales have increased.

Guy Longworth, senior vice president of brand marketing for Sony, said the following in regards to May's NPD figures: "PlayStation continues to be the best place to play for innovative IP, as PS4 was the preferred platform for May's biggest releases, including Watch Dogs and Wolfenstein: The New Order, and held four of the top five spots for next gen software sales. PS4 is the leading next-gen platform for sports, highlighted in May by the best-selling sports game, MLB 14: The Show."
