A Grapeland, Texas man has been charged with capital murder after beating his sister so savagely that she ended up losing her unborn child.

According to the Crockett Police Department, 26-year-old Juan Gutierrez Cortes tied up and beat his sister when she was six weeks pregnant. The woman was beaten so severely that she will need to undergo reconstruction surgery.

Following the attack, Cortes was charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault. After the woman lost her baby this past Sunday (May 17), capital murder was added to Cortes' charges.

Prior to the charge of capital murder, Cortes was being held on a $90,000 bond. That bond was increased to $1.5 million later to account for two charges of aggravated kidnapping and burglary with intent to commit an assault. A bond for the new murder charge has yet to be set.
