It's that time again to say goodbye to the previous year, and welcome a new year, a new you, and maybe even a new life. Maybe your resolution for this year is to learn something every day. Well, here are some facts about New Year's to get you started off on the right foot.

  1. Going way back to about 2000 BC in Mesopotamia is when the first known celebrations happened.
  2. New Year's Day for the early Romans wasn't on January 1st. It was on March 1st.
  3. Other cultures have been known to use the autumn equinox or summer solstice to mark a new year.
  4. The calendar which we know, the Gregorian, is adopted by the Roman Catholic Church.
  5. The month January, is named after the god with two faces, Janus. This symbolizes one face look to the future, and one looking to the past.
  6. We know that making resolutions is a tradition for lots of people. Other traditions include:
    1. Eating black eyed peas, which is considered good luck.
    2. Ancient Persians would give the gift of eggs, which symbolized productiveness.
    3. Auld Lang Syne, which is typically sung right at midnight, means "times gone by" and was written in 1788 by poet Scottish poet, Robert Burns.
