The newest Fatal Frame was unveiled by Koei Tecmo and Nintendo overnight, giving us a glimpse at what may become the Wii U's scariest game to date.

The new game is officially titled Project Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko in Japan, which translates to Fatal Frame: The Raven Haired Shrine Maiden. According to a Gematsu report, the game is set on an ancient mountain called Hikamiyama, known for being a "mountain of death." The game's legend states that only those who willingly choose to die go there at "the witching hour" or oumagatoki, which is the time when the boundary between the real world and the world of the dead is blurred.

Gematsu says that the Wii U GamePad will act as a "Projection Machine," showing the same scenes as the TV screen but also showing any ghosts or other haunts that may be nearing the main heroine. It will also act as the series' trademark camera, following supernatural movements and snapping photos as the player sees fit.

This new Fatal Frame sounds like a horrifying good time, but without plans for a Western release it's hard for us to truly get excited about it. What good does a really scary game do for us if we can't play it without importing? Hopefully the Koei Tecmo/Nintendo partnership here in the States goes beyond Hyrule Warriors and brings this ghastly affair to American Wii U consoles as well.

Fatal Frame: The Raven Haired Shrine Maiden launches September 27th in Japan. We'll be sure to update if and when the game is announced for closer territories.
