Iceland's Secret Solstice Festival kicks off this week, with Deftones set to headline on Saturday, June 18. But before the band plays its set onstage, frontman Chino Moreno will play a special acoustic set inside a volcano.

The show, appropriately dubbed Inside the Volcano, will take place inside the Thrihnuagigur volcano, the first time in history an artist has publicly performed inside a volcano.

Twenty guests will be on hand to see the show, with Icelandic artist Snorri Helgason the opening act. The fans will be lowered 400 feet into the magma chamber of the volcano for a once in a lifetime experience. The dormant volcano last erupted more than 4,000 years ago, so that won't be an issue.

Secret Solstice marks the first performance in Iceland for Deftones, whose latest album Gore was released in April and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Moreno spoke with Loudwire Nights about the sound of the album, saying, "It’s hard because when the people haven’t heard the record and they ask to generalize what this record sounds like. I have to take my time because I want to say heavy, but I’ve learned to not say that because when you say heavy people expect to put it on and hear Slayer or something. It’s not heavy in that way."

He continues, "There are parts that may be close, but more or less sonically to me, I don’t know. It’s just like, feels weighted. Some of these songs and riffs, I don’t know, it’s like a different kind of thing. I’m looking forward to hearing all of this stuff super loud and playing it super loud and live. I think it’s going to be great."

The band will be returning to North America at the end of July for numerous shows and festivals including a run with Refused in early August.
