A San Angelo man crashed into the Denny’s restaurant located at 427 W. Avenue I Tuesday night after fleeing police.
The crash caused extensive property damage to the building.  The restaurant has been closed to the public for remodeling but was occupied by construction crews at the time of the crash.   No one was injured because of the incident.

On August 20, 2013, just after 9:00 p.m., officials with the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office notified San Angelo Police about information they received regarding a subject who was allegedly homicidal and suicidal.  Further information was given to police about the possible whereabouts of the subject who was allegedly in possession of several firearms and was threatening to kill a woman and himself.

In an attempt to locate the subject, San Angelo Police Patrol Officers and Detectives with the Special Operations Section (S.O.S) responded to a residence in the 600 block of E. Harris Ave.  Although police did not locate the subject at the residence, they learned he was driving a white 2001 Ford F150 pickup truck with temporary dealer’s tags and he may be en route to the Cross Key Apartments located at 1222 S. Bryant Blvd.

Multiple units searched the surrounding area and approximately 40 minutes later, San Angelo Police spotted what they believed to be the subject’s vehicle traveling in the area of Harris and Abe St.  Police attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued.  The driver led police south on Abe St. and eventually pulled into the west entrance of the parking lot of the Cross Key Apartments.  The driver exited the vehicle while it was still in motion and ran towards the apartments.  The now unoccupied vehicle continued to travel through the parking lot and crossed W. Avenue I before crashing into the north wall of restaurant.

S.O.S. Detectives pursued the suspect who was seen running into an apartment towards a bedroom.  The suspect, who was later identified as Tyler Castle (DOB 10-27-87) of San Angelo, was located hiding inside a bedroom closet.  Police ordered Castle out of the closet and he was taken into custody after briefly resisting his arrest.  Police did not locate any weapons.

Castle was charged with Evading Arrest/Detention in a Vehicle and Evading Arrest/Detention on Foot.  He was transported to the Tom Green County Jail without incident.

Representatives from the restaurant told police they estimated the property damage to be in excess of $45,000.  The SAPD K9 Unit and Crime Scene Investigations also assisted with the investigation.
