Local FBI officials and the San Angelo Police Department are warning about a recent Scam involving an infected Zip File attachment.
Our local FBI office has received notification about the following suspected Email Scam:

Unknown persons are sending mass emails to people claiming to be a representative from FBI Headquarters.  The representative claims someone (like a neighbor) has filed charges against you concerning your recent activities and as a result, local and federal authorities have launched an investigation.   The email then prompts you to click on the attached Zip File and respond within 24 hours to avoid further action.

Although the email closes with what appears to be official FBI contact information, this is a SCAM.  Opening the file will infect your computer with malicious software or malware.  The FBI never makes initial contact with citizens by mass email.  If you receive a suspicious email similar to this one and are a victim of this Scam, please report this to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov .
