Angelo State University’s cheerleading squad brought home several top honors from the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Cheer Camp held July 12-15 at Texas State University in San Marcos.
Competing against squads from 32 other colleges and universities, the ASU cheerleaders took first place in the Cheer, Sideline and Game Day categories and plaques for the Most Collegiate and Leadership categories.  Cheer Coach Brandy Quigley said the 16 members of ASU’s squad had only two days of practice before competing at the camp, where they were also one of only four squads to earn a plaque for being “Game Day Ready.”

“It’s an ongoing tradition that the cheerleaders go to this camp,” Quigley said.  “It’s an outdoor camp and it’s ridiculously hot.  It helps us prepare for games.”

“Game Day Ready includes techniques for crowd-leading skills, tumbling, stunting, sign work and cheering,” said co-captain Averi Ruiz, a senior from Castroville.  “That was our biggest award because it wasn’t split into divisions.”

While the ASU squad is open to men, this year’s squad is made up entirely of women, 11 rookies and five returning veterans.  Senior Chaney Collins of San Angelo is the other co-captain.

Founded in 1974, UCA is a national organization that provides educational training for college and high school cheerleaders through summer camps and clinics on college campuses.  More information is available online at http://uca.varsity.com/.
