The viral marketing for 10 Cloverfield Lane almost feels more persistent and pervasive than the marketing campaign for Cloverfield — though as many of you will remember, those promotional puzzles weren’t really related to Matt Reeves’ monster film, but that doesn’t exactly seem to be the case with 10 Cloverfield Lane. A new piece of viral marketing fun has arrived online, this time offering a text-based simulation game (think Oregon Trail, minus the images) that challenges users to stay alive in an underground bunker for as long as possible.

Over the weekend, new viral marketing revealed communications between John Goodman’s Howard and his estranged daughter, with the doomsday prepper advising her on various modes of survival preparation and revealing his alleged involvement with a secret government project. Those messages popped up on a site called FunAndPrettyThings.com, which sounds like a place where your mom would order cheap jewelry and tchotchkes.

The latest addition to that website (via Slashfilm) is a text-based simulation game — well, it’s a game to us, but in the fictional narrative, it’s actually a sim created by Howard to help his daughter learn how to survive living in a bunker in a post-apocalyptic situation. Here’s the text before you enter the game (click to enlarge):

It’s like a more grim, simplistic Oregon Trail, but instead of replacing axles and fording rivers and trying to keep your friends from dying of dysentery, you have to take care of your bunker, keep your friends healthy and watch your supplies…or else you and your friends will die — not of dysentery, but of starvation or whatever.

The game is simple and can definitely help you kill a little time before the next piece of the puzzle arrives (or while you’re procrastinating at work like absolutely no one, ever, ahem).

10 Cloverfield Lane also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr., and hits theaters on March 11.
